ABOUT GRACIE COMBATIVES |
|
In the late 1920's Grand Master Helio Gracie created
Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after he realized that he was
physically too frail to utilize the traditional Japanese techniques.
Proven over the last 80 years to be the most reliable system for a
smaller person to defeat a larger, more athletic opponent, the
techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are based on precise timing and
effective use of leverage so that virtually anyone can do them, man
or woman, regardless of their size or athletic ability. Although
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of over 600 techniques, studies of the
fights conducted by members of the Gracie family have shown that 36
have been used more often and with greater success than all the
other techniques combined. Originally developed for the US ARMY,
Gracie Combatives is the only course that is entirely dedicated to
the mastery of these essential 36 techniques.

GOIU
RYU KARATE |
| Style
of Karate based on maintaining a balance of resistive and flexible
actions. The word "goju" a common Chinese idiom, has two
contrasting meanings: GO "hard" and JU "soft".
Goju Ryu is a close range self defense system, characterized by
circular and linear blocks, joint manipulations and kicking to the
lower body. Goju Ryu practitioners seek to develop timing and
reaction speed. Blows are delivered quickly and in rapid
succession. |
| Dynamic
tension breathing plays a major role in training. This breathing
is incorporated in the forms of movement known as "kata".
Peter Urban introduced Goju Ryu to the U.S. in 1959. Goju Ryu was
developed for the purpose of self-defense; it is not a sport, it
is a way of life. Patience is a virtue when training in Goju Ryu,
as mastering the basics (i.e. stances, blocks, kicks, elbows, and
punches) is required before students are allowed to advance to
more sophisticated techniques. |
